The French Ambassador to Kosovo, Olivier Guerot, has emphasized the urgent need for the formation of a new, accountable government in Kosovo—one that reports to the Assembly and is capable of being a reliable diplomatic partner.
Speaking on Rubikon at Klan Kosova, Ambassador Guerot stated:
“It’s not my role to say who should lead Kosovo’s institutions. What matters is that France needs a partner—someone to engage with on shared diplomatic issues. That’s why we need a government that is responsible before the Assembly.”
He revealed that during a May 12th meeting with caretaker Prime Minister Albin Kurti, they discussed not only the ongoing political impasse but also Kosovo’s application for membership in the Council of Europe, the Association of Serb-majority municipalities, and the broader EU-facilitated dialogue with Serbia.
“We need a functioning government to move forward on these issues. President Macron was very clear in his message from Tirana—Europe remains committed to Kosovo and Serbia engaging constructively in dialogue.”
Ambassador Guerot reiterated that there is no lack of European support, but progress depends on Kosovo having stable, legitimate institutions to engage with.
“My job is not to pick leaders—it is to ensure that France has a counterpart in Kosovo, a partner to collaborate with on bilateral and European matters.”
This statement comes amid growing frustration from both European diplomats and Kosovo citizens, as the country has now failed 19 times to elect a Speaker of the Assembly, delaying the constitution of the government after the February elections.
