The Kosovo Security Force (FSK) is entering the final stage of a decade-long transition aimed at transforming it into a fully capable national army. This critical process, now in its last three years, is progressing faster than originally anticipated, according to Acting Minister of Defense Ejup Maqedonci.

By the completion of this 10-year transition, expected in 2028, the FSK is projected to field more than 7,500 personnel, including 5,000 regular soldiers and 2,500 reservists.

Aligned with NATO standards, this transition phase has intensified efforts to procure heavy weaponry, advanced combat vehicles, and a military helicopter fleet. These acquisitions are considered vital for completing the transformation successfully.

Minister Maqedonci emphasized that the helicopter fleet and field artillery remain top priorities. Kosovo maintains ongoing discussions with key international partners, particularly the United States, to ensure these assets are procured timely.

“In addition to expanding personnel recruitment, the reinforcement of FSK’s artillery capabilities has been a major focus,” Maqedonci stated. The force has recently acquired new units including drone operations with Bayraktar UAVs, alongside multiple systems of indirect fire artillery such as mortars, all currently in active use.

However, he noted that the operation of these Bayraktar drones requires prior coordination with KFOR, the international peacekeeping force responsible for Kosovo’s airspace.

Echoing this, former FSK Commander Kadri Kastrati called for progress toward localizing airspace control, urging that Kosovo’s institutions gain authority over drone operations. Kastrati highlighted the need to form a commission to gradually transfer these competencies from NATO and KFOR to Kosovo, involving Brussels for support.

As Kosovo moves toward the culmination of this strategic 10-year journey, the fully formed FSK will stand as a modern, well-equipped national defense force, poised to meet regional security challenges with enhanced professionalism and capability.
