A German activist has been sentenced to eight years in a Hungarian prison for attacking far-right extremists and for membership in a left-wing extremist group, the BBC reported, as relayed by RKS News.
The 25-year-old, identified only as Maja T., was found guilty of involvement in violent attacks carried out by the group Antifa Ost ahead of an annual commemoration of Nazi soldiers in Budapest.
However, supporters have raised concerns over whether Maja T., who identifies as non-binary, can receive a fair trial in Hungary, as the country legally recognizes only two genders and Pride marches are banned.
Last year, Germany’s Federal Constitutional Court ruled that Maja T. could face discriminatory treatment and stated that extradition should not proceed.
The ruling, however, came too late to stop the transfer, as German police had already handed Maja T. over to Hungarian authorities by helicopter in an overnight operation in 2024.
The 25-year-old did not comment on the charges during the trial, and the verdict is subject to appeal.
