Prishtina, July 16 – German Ambassador to Kosovo Jörn Rohde has voiced strong support for EU Ambassador Aivo Orav, following the latter’s public condemnation of the Kosovo Government’s alleged interference in the judiciary, after a controversial decision by the Supreme Court.
In a firm message posted on social media, Ambassador Rohde emphasized that attacks on individual judges and political interference in the judicial system are “absolutely unacceptable.”
“Full support for the EU Ambassador’s statement! Such attacks against individual judges and political interference in the judiciary are absolutely unacceptable. This is the last thing this country needs in an already difficult political situation,” said Rohde.
The reaction comes a day after Kosovo’s caretaker government criticized the Supreme Court’s ruling, which deemed a ministerial administrative order as unlawful due to its issuance by an acting minister who is also a sitting MP. The government had labeled the court’s decision “arbitrary” and “one-sided.”
Ambassador Rohde underlined the importance of judicial independence and legal integrity, warning that undermining the justice system could seriously impact the country’s democratic institutions, especially during such sensitive political times.
The statements by both Rohde and Orav signal growing concern among Western diplomats about the rule of law in Kosovo, and the need for institutional maturity and respect for democratic principles as the country grapples with ongoing political deadlock.
