Until January of this year, only about 100 German soldiers were involved in the KFOR mission in Kosovo. However, in the meantime, the Bundeswehr has significantly increased its presence in Kosovo. A task force of about 200 soldiers has been sent to Kosovo this year, as reported on August 26 by the official website of the German Army, “Bundeswehr.de.”
According to the announcement, this decision comes in response to the increasing instability in the region, which has reportedly witnessed numerous instances of violence since 2022.
“For years, the German participation in the Kosovo Force (KFOR) operation was characterized by a reduction in contingents. However, with the growing outbreaks of violence threatening the region’s stability since 2022, the Bundeswehr sent an operational company of about 200 men and women to the KFOR Force in Kosovo in 2024. With its patrols, it provides a bit more security,” reads a summary of the article written by the editorial team of the official website of the German Army, “Bundeswehr.de.”
According to them, Kosovo has developed rapidly and has highways like those in Germany and a modern airport.
“Anyone arriving in Kosovo can hardly believe that it is an area of Bundeswehr operations. A modern airport, highways like in Germany, and various shopping centers are the first things that catch your eye. Kosovo, with its approximately 11,000 square kilometers, only half the size of Hesse, has developed rapidly in recent decades. However, the increased prosperity hides the fact that there is still a simmering conflict there, which requires the presence of an international peacekeeping force, the Kosovo Force (KFOR),” the article’s introduction states.
