German Chancellor Friedrich Merz urged stronger economic and defense cooperation within Europe during a speech to the Bundestag on Thursday, emphasizing the need to counter economic decline and external security threats.
Strengthening Defense and Economic Power
Merz highlighted the importance of enhancing Germany’s and NATO’s defensive capabilities in Europe, stating that being “a force for peace in the world” is one of the foundational ideals of the European Union. He added that recent events underscore the need for Europe to learn lessons and act decisively.
“Political action makes a difference in this world, for better or worse. Europe must act more decisively and in a more unified way. It must use its power to shape the world for good,” Merz said.
Preparing for the EU Summit
Ahead of the upcoming EU leaders’ summit in Brussels on October 23, Merz reaffirmed his support for plans to increase defense spending and for Germany to take a more assertive role in Europe.
“Peace can only exist in freedom when it is based on strength — economic strength, political determination, and military power,” he added.
Merz also expressed hope for a “true and lasting peace in the region,” while stressing that Europe must leverage its economic and political tools to maintain stability and security.
