German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has stated that efforts are ongoing to persuade both the United States and Israel to pursue a diplomatic solution to the ongoing conflict with Iran.

“Based on some statements made there, the strategic dimension is not entirely clear to us,” Merz said.

He emphasized that peace requires willingness from all sides, including Iran, adding that such readiness is currently lacking.

In a notable shift in tone, Merz avoided commonly used labels such as “terrorist regime” when referring to Iran, instead using the neutral term “Iran.” In contrast, he described Russia’s leadership as the “regime in Moscow.”

Merz also revealed details of his recent discussions with Donald Trump, which took place in Washington shortly after the outbreak of the conflict. He said he conveyed his concerns directly to the U.S. president.

Additionally, the German leader noted that he held a longer phone conversation with Trump last Sunday, during which he highlighted the risks the conflict poses to the global economy, as well as the potential advantage it could create for Russia in continuing its war against Ukraine.
