German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said on Sunday that he hoped the upcoming G7 summit would demonstrate unity and reach an agreement on four key points to help resolve the conflict between Israel and Iran.

Speaking as he prepared to fly to Canada for the G7 summit, Merz said the Middle East conflict would be at the top of the agenda.

The four points are:

Iran must not develop or possess nuclear weapons.

Israel has the right to defend itself against existential threats, which Merz said are represented by Iran’s nuclear program.

The conflict must not escalate further.

Space must be created for diplomacy.

“I would also like to add that in Germany we are preparing in case Iran targets Israeli or Jewish sites in Germany,” Merz told reporters, without providing further details.

G7 leaders are gathering for a summit in the Canadian Rocky Mountains from Sunday to Tuesday.

Merz added that Israel had requested firefighting materials, which Germany would provide, Reuters reports.
