German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius and Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul called on European colleagues to respond to Russian provocations with reason and determination, during a security forum in Warsaw.
Recent airspace violations by Russia in several EU countries indicate that “Russia is increasingly becoming a threat to NATO,” Pistorius said. He added that Moscow has been testing NATO allies with growing intensity and frequency, but emphasized that the alliance has responded with clarity, unity, determination, and reason, and will not fall into the trap of continuous escalation.
Foreign Minister Wadephul warned Russia against “hybrid aggression” and stressed that Germany will maintain composure and prevent escalation.
In recent weeks, NATO countries including Poland, Estonia, and Romania have reported incursions by Russian drones or military aircraft. NATO considers these intentional provocations, which Moscow denies. In Denmark, several drone incidents led to the temporary closure of airports, while in Germany, Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt reported groups of drones over Schleswig-Holstein.
Wadephul also highlighted the need for enhanced drone defense, calling for faster reaction capabilities and closer coordination of air defense systems.
