German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier has sharply criticized U.S. President Donald Trump, describing the meeting at the White House with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky as “unbelievable.”
“Diplomacy fails when negotiating partners are humiliated before the world,” Steinmeier told DPA during a flight to Uruguay on Saturday. “The scene at the White House yesterday took my breath away. I never would have believed that we would have to defend Ukraine from the United States,” he said, without elaborating on details.
Steinmeier emphasized that Europeans remain committed to freedom, democracy, and the rule of law. “We must prevent Ukraine from accepting subjugation,” he added.
Trump, on Friday, accused Zelensky of recklessly endangering global security by refusing to negotiate a peace agreement with Russia, warning that he was “gambling with World War III” and the lives of millions of people.
