A shipment of German military ammunition was stolen from a delivery truck in the eastern city of Burg, the German Ministry of Defense has reported. The stolen load reportedly included around 20,000 rounds: 10,000 pistol rounds, 9,900 blank rounds for assault rifles, and smoke grenades.
The theft is believed to have occurred on November 25, after the driver of the civilian transport company contracted by the military left the truck overnight in an unsecured parking lot.
The following day, when the shipment arrived at the Clausewitz barracks, the ammunition was found missing. Both the military and police have launched investigations, although it has not yet been confirmed whether anyone has been arrested or identified.
The Ministry of Defense emphasized the importance of security: “We take this theft very seriously – this type of ammunition must not fall into the wrong hands.”
The investigation will also focus on why the driver did not use a secure location, noting that a hotline and escort services are available for such cases.
This incident follows a series of similar events in the Saxony-Anhalt region. In August, police reported the loss of 90 rounds in Bernburg, and earlier, 180 rounds went missing in Eisleben.
