Germany is set to begin negotiations today to form a new government that will replace the outgoing administration led by Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
The coalition talks are being led by the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), the Christian Social Union (CSU), and the Social Democratic Party (SPD). According to an internal document obtained by Bild, the deadline to finalize the new government under Friedrich Merz is set for April 23.
Negotiators are operating under strict schedules and deadlines, with all expenses, including meal costs, required to be documented and covered by the negotiating parties.
With CDU, CSU, and SPD holding a majority in the newly formed Bundestag, the government formation process is expected to proceed more smoothly than initially anticipated. The urgency is further emphasized by the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) emerging as the second-largest party in the parliament.
