Germany has deported 81 Afghan nationals back to Afghanistan, marking one of the largest deportation waves since the Taliban returned to power in 2021.
According to the Federal Ministry of the Interior, the deportation took place early Friday morning, with logistical support provided by Qatar. All deportees were adult males.
This is Germany’s second official deportation to Afghanistan since the Taliban’s return to Kabul, as Berlin begins enforcing stricter migration policies under the new government.
Chancellor Friedrich Merz, since taking office, has toughened the country’s stance on illegal migration, increasing border controls and deepening cooperation with EU countries to secure external borders.
The Ministry of the Interior confirmed that further deportations will follow, indicating a sustained policy shift.
Later today, German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt is scheduled to meet with his counterparts from France, Poland, Austria, Denmark, the Czech Republic, and EU Commissioner for Migration Magnus Brunner to discuss new measures on migration and border security.
