Unidentified drones have been spotted flying over sensitive sites at the U.S. airbase in Ramstein, Germany, in recent weeks, according to a report by the news magazine Spiegel on Friday, citing a confidential report from German security authorities.

According to Spiegel, the report showed multiple drone sightings over the airbase on the evenings of December 3 and 4.

A security source confirmed to Reuters that the report on the drone sightings over Ramstein was accurate. The German Ministry of Defense declined to comment on the report.

German intelligence officials have warned that the country’s support for Ukraine in its war with Russia makes it a potential target for sabotage attempts, with recent security incidents at military barracks raising further alarms.

Spiegel also reported unexplained drone sightings over locations belonging to German arms manufacturer Rheinmetall and chemical group BASF.

“The security of BASF facilities is our top priority,” a company spokesperson said in an emailed statement. “Therefore, we monitor suspicious activities at all times and work closely with the relevant security authorities.”
