Germany has called on its European partners to urgently scale up assistance for Ukraine, warning that the current level of support from many EU states remains insufficient as the war continues into another difficult winter.

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul emphasized that Europe must share the burden more evenly. Speaking to Sky News, he noted that Germany has become Ukraine’s largest supporter in terms of military and other aid, but stressed that Berlin cannot carry this responsibility alone.

“More allies in Europe must urgently provide support,” Wadephul said, making clear that hesitation or political fatigue among some EU governments is undermining the collective European response.

Growing Concern Over Uneven Commitments

Berlin’s appeal comes amid increasing frustration within Germany about the slow pace at which several European states are contributing to Ukraine’s defense. Analysts say that while countries like Germany, Poland, and the Baltic states have consistently delivered substantial aid packages, other governments continue to lag behind—either due to domestic political pressures or a reluctance to provoke Moscow.

This uneven commitment, critics argue, weakens European credibility at a time when unity is essential.

Pressure Mounts as Ukraine Faces Intensifying Challenges

Ukraine continues to face significant military, energy, and humanitarian pressures. The German government has repeatedly warned that insufficient European engagement risks prolonging the conflict, increasing the cost for the entire continent.

Wadephul’s remarks reflect a broader German push for Europe to demonstrate strategic responsibility, particularly as Washington’s long-term commitment becomes increasingly uncertain under shifting U.S. political dynamics.
