Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced on Sunday that she would step down as the president of the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) group, a prominent center-right political group in the European Parliament.
Meloni made the announcement during a speech at the annual youth festival of her political party, “Brothers of Italy,” held in Rome. The event, which saw over 300 attendees, included various opposition party representatives and the Prime Minister of Lebanon, Najib Mikati.
The week-long festival has become a platform for celebrating Meloni’s government, which, two years into her leadership, has established itself as one of the most stable in Italy’s recent history. Meloni highlighted the importance of political stability, stating that it is what makes Italy “more reliable both nationally and internationally.” She expressed her confidence that her government would remain in power for the entirety of its term.
In her announcement, Meloni also stated that her party, “Brothers of Italy,” would now support Mateusz Morawiecki, the Prime Minister of Poland, to lead the ECR group moving forward.
This shift in leadership signals Meloni’s commitment to reshaping her political priorities as she continues to focus on strengthening Italy’s position in Europe. Her decision to step down from the ECR presidency, while surprising, also highlights her continued influence in European politics and her dedication to Italy’s growth on the international stage.
