Pavle Grbović, President of the Movement of Free Citizens (PSG), stated that the European Parliament’s resolution on the situation in Serbia has restored citizens’ confidence in the EU, but he emphasized that action from the European Commission is now expected.
Grbović met with European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos during the Congress of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE) in Brussels, attended by liberal party leaders from across Europe, MEPs, and European Commission representatives.
“The role of the European Union is crucial. The moment the Serbian regime senses a decline in Europe’s interest, it destroys everything that was previously achieved,” Grbović said.
He also noted that there is a window of opportunity to accelerate Serbia’s EU path, but warned that this opportunity will not last indefinitely.
“There is now a chance, but the question is how long it will last. Serbia needs change, but above all, it needs a European alternative,” the PSG leader added.
The European Parliament adopted the resolution on October 22, supporting Serbian students’ and citizens’ right to peaceful protest, condemning state-sponsored violence, intimidation, and arbitrary arrests, and holding the Serbian leadership politically responsible for escalating repression, normalizing violence, and weakening democratic institutions.
The resolution was passed with 457 votes in favor, 103 against, and 72 abstentions at the EP plenary session in Strasbourg.
