A major espionage scandal has shaken the Greek Armed Forces, raising serious alarms about national and NATO security. A senior officer of the Hellenic Air Force, around 50 years old, was arrested this morning inside the unit where he served, on suspicion of collecting and transmitting secret military information to a third country—specifically China.

According to information published by Greek media, the officer had access to classified NATO plans, considered critical to both national security and the Euro-Atlantic alliance. Sources close to the General Staff report that he was acting on behalf of a foreign state and was arrested shortly before handing over a significant amount of sensitive data.

The officer served in the 128th Telecommunications and Electronics Training Group of the Air Force, in the Kavouri area—a key position that granted him direct access to confidential information. He is accused of the serious criminal offense of “collecting and transmitting secret information of military importance to third parties,” a grave violation of the Military Penal Code.

Investigations show that the officer had been under close surveillance by Greece’s National Intelligence Service (NIS), in cooperation with specialized military counterintelligence personnel, for at least one month. During this period, what authorities describe as very strong evidence was gathered, leading to the immediate intervention and arrest.

According to Greek media, the suspect allegedly used the encrypted application Signal to communicate, systematically deleting messages to avoid leaving traces and to make detection of his illegal activities more difficult.

The arrest followed a carefully planned operation involving a prosecutor, NIS agents, and specialized counterintelligence officers. The officer is currently in pre-trial detention and has been questioned by authorities, while investigations continue to determine whether other individuals or wider espionage networks are involved.

In an official statement, the Hellenic National Defence General Staff confirmed the arrest, stressing that the suspected actions pose a serious threat to the country’s national interests and military security.
