Greek-Cypriot Member of the European Parliament, Geadi Geadi, has spread disinformation during his speech at the European Parliament, where Kosovo’s Foreign Minister, Donika Gërvalla, also spoke about the recent terrorist attack on Kosovo’s critical water infrastructure in the Ibar-Lepenc area. Geadi claimed that there are numerous attempts to expel and kill Serbs.
What did he say?
“Given that I have some doubts regarding the perpetrators, as you have condemned Belgrade even though Belgrade has said it is willing to identify the perpetrators. Serbia has no intention to deviate from its European Union path. There should be a proper investigation. Looking at the region, there have been systematic attempts to change the demographics, such that Serbs are excluded, killed, and instead of de-escalation, what seems to be happening is an escalation. And now we are hearing about Greater Albania—what do you think about those trends that do not lead to regional stabilization?”
Analysis:
The narrative used by MEP Geadi is copied from Serbian officials and their leaders, who frequently claim that Kosovo intends to carry out “ethnic cleansing” of Serbs and that they are allegedly being persecuted.
Geadi is spreading disinformation when he claims there are efforts to change demographics and expel or kill Serbs. No international report highlights any such violations or discrimination against Serbs living in Kosovo. Kosovo’s Constitution is among the most advanced in Europe when it comes to protecting and guaranteeing the rights of minorities, despite their small percentage. This has been confirmed by the most recent report from the Council of Europe’s rapporteurs who visited Kosovo to assess the respect for minority rights.
The Kosovo government has consistently urged Serbs to integrate into society, the police, and the army. It was Belgrade that, through pressure, intimidation, and threats, forced Serbs to abandon the Kosovo Police two years ago as a protest over the license plate issue. /The Geopost/
