Speaking at a joint press conference with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen reiterated that Greenland is not for sale and insisted that, if forced to choose, it would “choose Denmark over the United States.”

“One thing must be clear to everyone: Greenland does not want to be owned by the United States, Greenland does not want to be governed by the United States, Greenland does not want to be part of the United States. We choose the Greenland we know today, which is part of the Kingdom of Denmark,” he said, as reported by The Guardian and relayed by Rks News.

Meanwhile, Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said it has “not been easy” for Denmark to “resist completely unacceptable pressure from our closest ally.”

She warned somberly, however, that “there is ample evidence that the most difficult part still lies ahead.”

Frederiksen added that what is at stake is “something more fundamental,” as Denmark faces the need to defend the principles that “borders cannot be changed by force … or by buying another people, and that small countries should not have to fear large countries.”

The Danish prime minister stressed that Denmark “is not seeking conflict, but the message is clear: Greenland is not for sale.”

She also added that NATO must ‘defend Greenland just as it would every other inch of NATO territory.’
