Greenland’s newly appointed Prime Minister, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, has firmly dismissed former U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent statements about taking control of the Arctic island.
“President Trump says the United States is taking Greenland. Let me be clear: the U.S. will not take this. We belong to no one. We decide our own future,” Nielsen stated.
Trump’s Controversial Comments on Greenland
During an interview with NBC on Saturday, Trump declared:
“We will take Greenland. Yes, 100%,” adding that while there is a “good chance we can do it without military force,” the U.S. remains interested in the island’s strategic and economic value.
Greenland’s Response and Political Stance
Nielsen, a 33-year-old former Minister of Industry and Minerals, was sworn in as Greenland’s youngest prime minister last Friday.
In his first press conference as leader, held in his hometown, he called for political unity to counter external pressures on Greenland.
His inauguration took place just hours before the arrival of a high-profile U.S. delegation led by Vice President JD Vance, underscoring rising geopolitical tensions over the Arctic region.
