A gunman opened fire inside a Midtown Manhattan office building on Monday, killing at least four people, including an off-duty New York police officer, before taking his own life, authorities confirmed.

The suspect, identified as Shane Tamura, was a Nevada resident who drove cross-country from Las Vegas to New York. He is believed to have acted alone, according to New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch, who said investigators are still working to determine a possible motive.

Multiple people were also injured, New York City Mayor Eric Adams said in a statement. Adams urged anyone still inside the building to stay where they are while police conducted a floor-by-floor search to secure the skyscraper.

The incident took place at an office tower in a busy area of Midtown, just a few blocks from Central Park. The building houses major tenants, including offices for Blackstone, KPMG, the Irish Consulate, and the National Football League headquarters.

Tamura fatally shot himself inside the building, sources briefed on the investigation told the Associated Press.

The shooting stunned an area known for its dense concentration of top financial firms and diplomatic offices, drawing a massive police response that shut down surrounding streets on Monday afternoon.
