The Hague-based Specialist Chambers confirmed on Thursday that former Kosovo President Hashim Thaçi was granted permission to visit Kosovo for humanitarian reasons, allowing him to see his ailing father in the hospital.

“Yes, I can confirm that for compelling humanitarian reasons, the Trial Panel and the Pre-Trial Judge have instructed the Registrar to facilitate a custodial visit to Kosovo for Hashim Thaçi to be with his father. The accused remains in detention under the jurisdiction of the Specialist Chambers,” a court spokesperson told KosovaPress.

Thaçi arrived in Kosovo on Thursday after several previous requests for a visit had been denied. His visit is taking place under strict security measures, with a significant police presence reported near the Internal Medicine Clinic at the University Clinical Center of Kosovo (QKUK).

Thaçi has been in pre-trial detention in The Hague since November 2020, facing war crimes and crimes against humanity charges in a prolonged judicial process.
