Following the recent ruling of the Constitutional Court, the Assembly of Kosovo held a session on Wednesday for the election of the Speaker of the Assembly.

The Vetëvendosje Movement nominated Albulena Haxhiu, who once again failed to secure enough votes. Subsequently, Glauk Konjufca nominated Donika Gërvalla, who, like Haxhiu, received only 57 votes.

As a result, the acting chair of the Assembly, Avni Dehari, announced the end of the session and scheduled the next one for August 22 at 11:00.

Former MP of the Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK), Xhavit Haliti, commented on the failed vote for the Speaker of the Assembly, where Vetëvendosje candidates Haxhiu and Gërvalla did not succeed.

He emphasized that PDK’s stance of not voting for ministers is political, adding that not all of them had been ineffective in their duties.

Haliti further stressed that Donika Gërvalla’s candidacy is unacceptable to the opposition, describing her as unsuccessful in her role.

“PDK’s position of not voting for ministers is a political stance. Those who were corrupt should not be voted for, but perhaps some were not bad ministers and did not break the law. Donika Gërvalla’s name is unacceptable to the opposition, as she was not successful in her role and was highly confrontational with the opposition,” Haliti told Front Online.

He underlined that the names proposed by the majority cannot move forward without an agreement with the opposition.

Haliti pointed out that if Vetëvendosje leader Albin Kurti wants to form institutions, he must enter a coalition.

“There is no name that can pass without opposition approval. The idea that ‘we propose, you vote’ does not work. Parties are divided and competing to take power. If Kurti intends to form institutions in the coming days, he must make a coalition. If not, the issue will go to the Constitutional Court. It is not the opposition’s duty to make up Kurti’s numbers,” Haliti stated.
