The Palestinian militant group Hamas confirmed on Saturday the death of Mohammad Sinwar, one of the group’s key military figures in the Gaza Strip. He was the younger brother of Yahya Sinwar, the leader of the Islamist faction, who was also killed earlier during the conflict with Israel.

Hamas did not provide details regarding the circumstances of Mohammad Sinwar’s death but released photographs of him alongside other leaders, describing them as “martyrs.”

Israel had previously claimed to have killed him in an airstrike in May, but this is the first time the news has been officially confirmed by Hamas.

Following his death, Izz al-Din Haddad, a close associate of Sinwar who currently oversees operations in northern Gaza, is expected to take over leadership of Hamas’ armed wing across the entire Gaza Strip.

According to Reuters, Mohammad Sinwar had gained significant influence within Hamas’ military structure, especially after the killing of his brother, one of the main co-organizers of the October 7, 2023, attack against Israel.
