Palestinian militant group Hamas has released eight hostages, including three Israelis and five Thai nationals, amid an ongoing temporary ceasefire in Gaza. However, Israel has delayed the scheduled release of 110 Palestinian prisoners, citing disorderly conditions during the handover.

Hostage Release in Two Phases

The hostages were freed in two separate operations. First, 20-year-old Israeli soldier Agam Berger was released in Jabalia, northern Gaza. Video footage captured her emerging from damaged buildings, escorted by Hamas militants before entering a Red Cross vehicle. She was later reunited with her parents outside Gaza.

Later, two more Israelis, 29-year-old Arbel Yahoud and 80-year-old Gadi Mozes, along with five Thai nationals, were handed over in Khan Younis, southern Gaza. The Israeli military identified the Thai hostages as Thenna Pongsak, Sathian Suwannakham, Sriaoun Watchara, Seathao Bannawat, and Rumnao Surasak, all farm workers abducted from Israel during the October 7 attack.

Israel Delays Prisoner Exchange

The exchange was marred by chaotic scenes as large crowds gathered during the handover, making it difficult for militants to clear a path for the Red Cross vehicles. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned the disorder, urging international mediators to ensure safer conditions in future releases.

Following the release of the hostages, Netanyahu’s office announced a delay in freeing 110 Palestinian prisoners, stating that the decision was made “until the safe departure of our hostages in the upcoming phases is assured.” Israeli media reported that buses carrying the Palestinian detainees were turned back.

Hamas Responds to Israeli Decision

Hamas criticized Israel’s move and confirmed that it was engaging with mediators to “compel” Israel to fulfill its commitments under the ceasefire agreement.

The situation remains tense, with international efforts underway to ensure the continuation of hostage releases and prisoner exchanges under the terms of the temporary ceasefire.
