AAK leader Ramush Haradinaj has commemorated the 37th anniversary of the Trepça miners’ strike, describing it as a historic moment that evolved into a nationwide resistance movement.
In a post on his Facebook profile, Haradinaj said that the miners’ strike marked a turning point on the path toward freedom, honoring the more than 1,300 miners who took part in the protest decades ago at the Trepça mining complex.
“The miners’ strikes were acts of courage and turning points on our path toward freedom. Today, marking the 37th anniversary of the Miners’ Strike, we honored the work of more than 1,300 miners of that time. This strike turned into a nationwide resistance, shaking the foundations of the then state of Yugoslavia,” Haradinaj wrote.
He also emphasized that the best way to honor the miners’ sacrifice was to restore Trepça as an economic force for the country. Haradinaj recalled that during his term as prime minister in March 2019, the statute of Trepça was approved and the company was registered under the laws of Kosovo.
The miners’ strike of 1989 remains one of the most significant events in Kosovo’s modern political history, widely seen as a symbol of resistance during the final years of the former Yugoslav federation.
