Acting President of Kosovo, Albulena Haxhiu, stated that the country has no time to lose, expressing hope that a new president will be elected within the constitutional deadline. Otherwise, she warned, she will be obliged to announce the date for new elections.
A day earlier, Haxhiu had said she was open to helping facilitate a solution to the presidential issue.
Speaking on April 8 following a presidency meeting, she clarified that in her role as Speaker of the Assembly, she is ready to contribute by organizing meetings and discussions with parliamentary groups, should they consider such engagements necessary.
“I welcome the continuation of the meetings that have taken place in recent days. We hope to set aside all differences and come together to find a solution for the president. I hope it will not come to a situation where, as Acting President, I have to announce the date of elections, because as you know from the Constitutional Court ruling, the Assembly is considered dissolved once the deadline is reached without electing a president,” Haxhiu said.
According to a ruling by the Constitutional Court of Kosovo issued in March, lawmakers have until April 28 to elect a new president. Failing that, the country will head to elections, which must be held within 45 days.
