The Kosovo Emergency Management Agency (EMA) has issued a public warning urging citizens to exercise increased caution during the summer season, which is characterized by high temperatures and a heightened risk of wildfires.

In an official announcement, the EMA emphasized that fires in forests, fields, and open areas not only cause significant material damage, but also pollute the air, destroy nature, and endanger public safety.

The agency reminded citizens that causing fires—whether intentional or due to negligence—is a criminal offense and punishable by law.

“It must be emphasized and made clear that intentional arson, as well as fires caused by negligence, are criminal acts punishable by law. Any person who starts a fire that damages public or private property, or endangers lives and the environment, will face criminal prosecution and legal penalties according to the applicable legislation,” the statement reads.

EMA called on citizens who witness a fire, suspect arson, or see smoke or flames in open areas to immediately alert emergency services, which can be contacted free of charge at any time:

Emergency Operations Center – 112

Fire Services – 193

Kosovo Police – 192

“Your quick action can prevent great damage, save lives, and protect our nature,” EMA concluded.
