In a surprising political twist, former U.S. Secretary of State and long-time rival Hillary Clinton has said she would nominate President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize if he successfully ends the war in Ukraine without allowing Russia to seize Ukrainian territory.
Speaking on the Raging Moderates podcast, Clinton told host Jessica Tarlov that if Trump could “end this terrible war” while standing up to Russian President Vladimir Putin, she would support his nomination for the prestigious award.
“Honestly, if he could end this war, if he could do it without putting Ukraine in a position where it must give up its territory to the aggressor, if he could stand up to Putin—something we haven’t seen, but maybe this is the chance—if President Trump were the architect of that, I would nominate him for the Nobel Peace Prize,” Clinton said. “My goal here is not to allow capitulation to Putin.”
Her comments came as Trump traveled to Alaska for a historic meeting with Putin, where both leaders are expected to discuss a potential ceasefire in the three-year-long conflict.
Trump has previously expressed interest in receiving the Nobel Peace Prize, following in the footsteps of his predecessor, Barack Obama, who was awarded the honor in 2009.
