Ambassador Jeff Hovenier, during the ceremony marking the 25th anniversary of the National Democratic Institute (NDI), stated that the U.S. government is steadfast in its support for Kosovo.
In his remarks to those present, Hovenier reiterated the U.S. Government’s stance on Kosovo.
“I do this because I believe it is very important to avoid any misunderstandings or misinterpretations of the U.S. position. In 2008, the U.S. recognized Kosovo as an independent and sovereign state.”
“We made this decision based on Kosovo’s firm commitment at the time to implement the commitments made in the Ahtisaari Plan to establish a democratic, multi-ethnic, and inclusive state. The U.S. position has not changed, it is unwavering, and it will not change,” emphasized the American ambassador.
“We do not accept as valid any attempt to question the status of Kosovo or its institutions. Let me be clear: Kosovo’s Constitution is legitimate, and we are proud of our role in supporting the people of Kosovo as they developed it. Let me be clear: The institutions of the state of Kosovo are entirely legitimate, and we are proud to have helped create and consolidate those institutions, including assistance from NDI and other partners,” Hovenier declared.
“I want to reiterate another key point: Kosovo’s promise is as an independent, sovereign, multi-ethnic state with special protections for minority rights, and we are proud of the role we have played in helping Kosovo’s partners advance this vision. We continue our efforts to work with the current government in pursuit of closer cooperation to see this vision realized. I believe our vision is very clear: Kosovo enjoys a society where all citizens live in dignified and secure conditions, including those from minority communities.”
“Let me be clear: We have been part of your process in building and supporting a successful, sovereign, democratic, and multi-ethnic state. Our commitment to this is unwavering, it is ironclad. One of the best manifestations of this is our support for NDI and our partnership to witness what is being achieved,” he said, as he thanked NDI for its work and for representing the U.S. in the best possible way in Kosovo.
