The American Ambassador Jeffrey Hovenier has responded to his counterpart in Belgrade, Christopher Hill, who last night emphasized that Serbia is closer to NATO than Kosovo.
“I contest those who wish to place someone ahead of others on the path to NATO,” said the ambassador.
Hovenier stated that the policy of the USA is clear in wanting each state to be able to make decisions for itself regarding the alliances and organizations it wishes to join.
He mentioned that this is also why the USA supports Ukraine, as it wants the Ukrainian people to decide for themselves and not others.
The ambassador acknowledged that Kosovo has decided and wishes to join NATO.
“We will do everything to support this. The USA has invested a lot of energy and is very committed to supporting Kosovo and the KSF in their transition…Kosovo faces the challenge that some NATO countries do not recognize it as the USA and other partners do. We want to see this change. We want to see Kosovo’s future in NATO advance. Kosovo aligns well with NATO in terms of values and institutions. There are problems and issues that need to be resolved,” said Hovenier, who added that he expects Kosovo to one day become a full member of NATO.
“I want to oppose those who want to make comparisons. There are significant commitments to advancing the security of Kosovo,” the American ambassador emphasized.
