The Komisioni Qeveritar për Persona të Zhdukur has announced that human remains have been discovered at the site known as Përzhina in Rahovec. The remains have been exhumed and sent for examination to the Instituti i Mjekësisë Ligjore.

According to the official statement, the exact number of individuals and their identities cannot yet be determined. These details will only be confirmed after the completion of forensic analyses.

“During today’s excavation activities, human remains were found, exhumed, and sent for examination to the Institute of Forensic Medicine, in accordance with legal procedures and forensic standards. The exact number of individuals and their identities can only be confirmed after the relevant forensic analyses are completed,” the statement said.

Excavations at this location resumed after being temporarily suspended in December last year due to weather conditions and operational factors. At that time, assessment excavations were conducted in only one sector of the area of interest, resulting in the exhumation of remains belonging to two individuals, as well as the discovery of additional bone fragments.

The site had previously been searched by teams from the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia and United Nations Interim Administration Mission in Kosovo. Earlier suspicions suggested that the remains of up to eight victims could be located there.

During 2025, excavations were carried out at 33 locations, leading to the discovery of the remains of 22 individuals. The process is expected to continue throughout 2026.

From the 1998–1999 war in Kosovo, 1,577 persons are still officially listed as missing.
