Human remains believed to belong to individuals missing during the 1998–1999 Kosovo War have been discovered in the Hajvalia cemetery, according to the Kosovo Police 24-hour report.
Authorities confirmed that excavations are ongoing and are expected to continue in the coming days as investigators search for additional skeletal remains.
According to the official statement, “Police units from the Directorate for the Investigation of War Crimes, in coordination with the Institute of Forensic Medicine (IML) and the Government Commission on Missing Persons, executed a court order issued by the Basic Court in Prishtina to conduct excavations in the Hajvalia village cemetery. During the operation, they found human skeletal remains believed to belong to at least three persons who went missing during the last war in Kosovo (1998–1999).”
The Institute of Forensic Medicine has taken the remains for forensic examination to determine their identity and cause of death.
Investigations will continue in the coming days, while the case remains under active inquiry by Kosovo authorities.
