Hungary is at risk of losing its voting rights in the European Union, as the EU Council has scheduled its eighth hearing on rule-of-law concerns for May 27, 2025.
According to Al Jazeera, this development comes at a time when the EU is actively seeking ways to bypass Budapest’s veto regarding Ukraine’s potential accession to the Union, further escalating tensions between Hungary and other member states.
“We have Plan B and Plan C. However, our focus remains on Plan A, which aims to gain everyone’s support,” said EU high representative Kaja Kallas, highlighting the challenge of Hungary’s persistent veto threats.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has repeatedly blocked EU aid packages for Ukraine and opposed sanctions against Russia, drawing increasing criticism from European institutions. In recent months, the European Parliament has consistently flagged serious breaches of the rule of law in Hungary, forming the basis for invoking Article 7 of the EU Treaty.
If this process is carried to its conclusion, Hungary could be stripped of its voting rights in the EU Council, marking an unprecedented political move in the Union’s history.
