The European Union has officially denied Hungary €1 billion in funds due to corruption allegations, marking the first instance of the EU taking such action against a member state.
This decision, announced in an EU statement on December 31, is part of a broader €19.7 billion package of funds frozen since 2022. The freeze stems from the EU’s conditionality mechanism, triggered by concerns over Hungary’s public procurement practices and lack of transparency and oversight.
Despite implementing reforms to address these issues, Hungary missed the December 31 deadline for unlocking additional funds.
