German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said he had low expectations for the talks held over the weekend in Islamabad, Pakistan, between the United States and Iran.

Speaking in Berlin earlier this morning, Merz stated: “I was not surprised by the decision to halt the talks in Islamabad. From the beginning, I did not have the impression that they were particularly well prepared.”

Merz also suggested that a diplomatic solution will not be a quick process and emphasized that economic effects will continue to be felt for some time.

“This will remain a long-term process, and we will continue to feel the consequences of this war for a long time, even after it ends,” he added.

Last week, Merz had already expressed reservations about the outcome of the talks, stating that peace still appears far off.
