Former President of Albania, Ilir Meta, has submitted a formal request to the Constitutional Court challenging the decision of the High Court, which upheld his detention in prison.

Represented by his lawyer, Kujtim Cakrani, Meta has filed a motion requesting the annulment of the February 27, 2025 ruling that ordered his continued arrest, Euronews Albania reports.

Meta is also seeking to overturn the previous ruling from November 19, 2024, issued by the Court of Appeals for Corruption and Organized Crime (GJKKO), which also upheld his detention.

The leader of the Freedom Party (PL) has been held in isolation at Prison 313 in Tirana since November 21, 2024. He is under investigation for his alleged involvement in the CEZ/DIA corruption affair, dating back to the time when his former party, LSI, governed alongside the Democratic Party, as well as for alleged lobbying activities in Washington, D.C.
