JB Pritzker, Governor of the State of Illinois, has officially proclaimed February 17 as Kosovo Independence Day in Illinois, USA. The announcement was shared by the Embassy of Kosovo in the United States.
According to the proclamation letter, the Albanian-American community in Illinois has made significant contributions to the cultural, economic, and social life of the state, distinguishing itself as business leaders, professionals, and active members of their communities.

WHEREAS, the State of Illinois is honored to join Albanian-Americans throughout our state in commemorating February 17, 2008, as the day the Republic of Kosovo declared its independence; and
WHEREAS, on that historic day, with unwavering commitment to the principles of freedom, sovereignty, and self-determination, the Republic of Kosovo officially declared independence in Pristina, marking a transformative moment in its history and establishing itself as a free and sovereign state; and
WHEREAS, the Republic of Kosovo, as the newest state in Europe, remains firmly committed to upholding democratic principles, human rights, and the rule of law; and
WHEREAS, the enduring bond between the Republic of Kosovo and the United States is rooted in shared values of freedom, democracy, and mutual respect, with the United States playing a key role in supporting Kosovo’s path toward stability, state-building, and prosperity; and
WHEREAS, the Albanian-American community in Illinois has made significant contributions to the cultural, economic, and civic life of our state, serving as business leaders, professionals, and active community members while preserving and sharing their rich cultural heritage; and
WHEREAS, this year the State of Illinois proudly marks the 18th anniversary of Kosovo’s independence, recognizing the resilience and achievements of its people in their pursuit of freedom and progress; and
WHEREAS, Illinois recognizes and honors the growing partnerships and economic ties between Kosovo and the United States, as well as the continued contributions of the Kosovo diaspora in strengthening cooperation and mutual growth;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, JB Pritzker, Governor of the State of Illinois, do hereby proclaim February 17, 2026, as Kosovo Independence Day in Illinois, celebrating the independence of the Republic of Kosovo and honoring the contributions of Albanian-Americans to the prosperity and diversity of our state.
