The Regional Water Company “Prishtina” and the National Institute of Public Health of Kosovo (NIHPH) have announced that manganese levels in the water have risen in the area supplied by Badoc Lake, which includes many neighborhoods of Prishtina and surrounding areas of the capital.
“Recent laboratory analyses show a rising trend in manganese concentration both in the lake water and in the distribution network. Although these values exceed the limit set in Administrative Instruction no. 10/2021 – Water quality for human consumption, so far they have not exceeded the health standard considered to impact human health,” the joint press release stated.
In order to protect public health, NIHPH and RWC “Prishtina” appealed to citizens supplied by the Water Plant at Badoc Lake not to use the water for drinking until further notice.
“NIHPH emphasizes that manganese contamination is chemical contamination and that boiling the water does not eliminate manganese. The water may only be used for cleaning, personal hygiene, and household maintenance. NIHPH has intensified the monitoring of drinking water quality as well as cooperation with RWC Prishtina to secure quality water for citizens,” the statement said.
RWC “Prishtina” said that it has “immediately taken the necessary measures,” which include “reducing production capacity to maintain water quality; intensifying flushing processes of the distribution network, including both main and secondary pipes; and, to ensure uninterrupted drinking water supply to the affected areas (as presented on the maps), RWC ‘Prishtina’ will provide water through tankers, according to the schedule determined and presented by the company.”
