At least 26 people have lost their lives in northeastern states of India following torrential rains that triggered severe flooding and landslides over the past three days, according to local authorities.

In the state of Assam, eight fatalities were confirmed as a result of flooding and landslides, the Assam State Disaster Management Authority reported late Saturday. The situation in several areas has been described as critical.

Federal Minister Kiren Rijiju, who represents Arunachal Pradesh, stated that seven people died in what he called a “tragic landslide” in that region.

Meanwhile, in Meghalaya, another severely affected state, officials confirmed that six people have died in rain-related incidents in recent days. In neighboring Mizoram, at least five people were killed due to landslides, according to a report by All India Radio.

In Manipur, the Indian Army responded to emergency calls from the local government by launching immediate rescue operations, saving 800 civilians from flood-hit areas in Imphal East and Imphal West districts. Military and paramilitary forces have been deployed across affected regions to assist with evacuations and relief efforts.

Authorities have warned that the situation could worsen in the coming days as heavy rainfall is forecast to continue across the region.
