Moscow, July 16, 2025 — Internet connectivity has been partially cut off in several Russian regions over the past few days, prompting concern and speculation. Today, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed the disruptions, stating that the shutdowns are deliberate and linked to defense measures against Ukrainian drone attacks.
Responding to growing questions over the outages, Peskov justified the move, saying:
“The periodic suspension of mobile internet across Russia is intentional and necessary. It is a protective measure aimed at shielding our citizens from threats posed by Ukrainian drones.”
According to Reuters, Russian authorities have been deactivating mobile internet networks when deemed necessary — a tactic they argue helps obstruct or neutralize drone strikes launched by Ukraine.
The move reflects Russia’s increased vulnerability to UAV incursions deep within its territory, as Ukraine continues its use of drone warfare in response to Moscow’s ongoing invasion.
