Iran is formally demanding an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council following the United States’ attacks on its nuclear facilities. This demand was conveyed in a letter from Iran’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Amir Saeid Iravani, to UN Secretary-General António Guterres and the President of the UN Security Council, Guyana’s Permanent Representative Caroline Rodrigues-Birkett, as reported by RIA Novosti.
The letter emphasizes the “severe and far-reaching consequences of the criminal and barbaric actions of the U.S. on international peace and security.” Iran urges the Security Council to “immediately hold an emergency session to consider this flagrant and unlawful act of aggression, condemn it in the strongest terms, and take all necessary measures within the Council’s legal authority to ensure that those responsible for these grave crimes are held fully accountable and do not go unpunished.”
The U.S. launched attacks on three locations in Iran earlier today, escalating its involvement in the conflict alongside Israel, with the stated aim of dismantling Iran’s nuclear program. US President Donald Trump, in an address to the nation from the White House, claimed that key Iranian nuclear sites were “completely destroyed.” The extent of the damage has not been independently verified.
