Iran announced on Sunday the creation of a new National Defense Council, tasked with centralizing the country’s defense strategies and strengthening its military capabilities.
According to state media, citing the Secretariat of the Supreme National Security Council, the new body will “review defense plans and enhance the capabilities of the armed forces in a centralized manner.”
The council will be led by newly elected President Masoud Pezeshkian and will include Iran’s top political and military leadership — among them the Speaker of Parliament, the Chief Justice, senior military commanders, and ministers from relevant departments.
The decision to form the council was approved by the Supreme National Security Council, Iran’s highest security authority, under Article 176 of the Iranian constitution.
Earlier on Sunday, Iran’s Chief of Army Staff, Amir Hatami, warned that threats from Israel remain a serious risk.
“Even a one percent threat must be treated as a hundred percent threat. We must not underestimate the enemy or consider its threats expired,” Hatami told state news agency IRNA, adding that Iran’s missile and drone forces “remain ready for action.”
In June, Israel and the United States launched strikes inside Iranian territory, targeting nuclear facilities in what media dubbed the “12-day war.” In response, Tehran retaliated with missile and drone attacks on Israeli targets.
Last month, Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant warned that Israel would strike Iran again if it felt threatened.
