Iranian state media reported that Mohsen Langarneshin, an Iranian citizen, was executed on April 30 after being convicted of espionage and intelligence collaboration with Israel.
Iran, engaged in a decades-long shadow conflict with Israel, has previously sentenced to death numerous individuals accused of ties with Mossad, the Israeli intelligence agency, particularly for roles in assassinations or sabotage aimed at undermining Iran’s nuclear program.
According to Iran’s judiciary news agency, Mizan, Langarneshin was implicated in multiple cases, including the 2022 killing of a colonel in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), Sayyad Khodaei.
“During the two years he spied, he was involved in significant actions, including supporting terrorist operations and being present at the site where Sayyad Khodaei was killed,” said state media.
Authorities claimed he also provided operational support for an attack on an industrial center in Isfahan linked to Iran’s Ministry of Defense.
Iranian state media also alleged that Langarneshin had confessed to the charges.
According to Amnesty International, Iran carried out 853 executions last year.
Sayyad Khodaei, the IRGC colonel, was assassinated outside his home in Tehran. Israeli media had described Khodaei as a key figure behind plots to target Israelis and Jewish communities globally.
In its annual human rights report released April 29, Amnesty International condemned Iran’s actions, saying the country “arbitrarily executed hundreds of people” in 2024 and used the death penalty as a “tool of political repression” against protesters, dissidents, and ethnic minorities.
