The purchase of around 400 missiles from Iran includes many from the Fateh-110 family of short-range ballistic weapons, such as the Zolfaghar, according to three Iranian sources.
This road-mobile missile is capable of hitting targets at distances ranging from 300 to 700 kilometers, experts say.
Deliveries began in early January after the deal was finalized during recent meetings between Iranian and Russian military and security officials held in Tehran and Moscow, one of the Iranian sources said.
An unidentified Iranian military official told Reuters that at least four missile shipments have been delivered so far, with additional deliveries expected in the coming weeks.
“There will be more shipments. There is no reason to hide it. We are allowed to export weapons to any country we want,” the official noted.
Another senior Iranian official said that some of the missiles were sent to Russia by ship across the Caspian Sea, while others were transported by air.
A fourth Iranian source confirmed to Reuters that Russia has recently received a large number of missiles from Iran, but did not provide further details.
