Iran has officially lifted restrictions on the Google Play platform and the messaging app WhatsApp, according to the state news agency IRNA. The move comes as part of a broader effort by Iranian authorities to ease internet limitations, with additional platforms potentially being unblocked in the future.

The restrictions were initially imposed in 2022 following mass protests, as authorities sought to prevent the spread of protest footage. However, newly elected President Masoud Pezeshkian has openly criticized these restrictions, labeling them “absurd” and committing to removing internet limitations. This decision marks a partial victory against hardliner politicians in Iran.

Despite the recent changes, the fate of other major platforms like Instagram, Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), and Telegram remains uncertain. Many Iranians have bypassed internet restrictions using virtual private networks (VPNs), while Iran’s political elite continues to maintain active accounts on banned platforms.

The debate around internet freedom in Iran reflects deeper ideological divides. Shiite clerics often view the internet as a threat to the theocratic system, accusing foreign-controlled apps of inciting unrest and undermining state media.

The unblocking of WhatsApp and Google Play signals a step toward digital openness, though full internet freedom in Iran remains a contentious and unresolved issue.
