Internet connectivity in Iran has suffered a dramatic collapse, dropping from 78% to just 3% within a few hours on Wednesday afternoon, according to data from NetBlocks, an international organization that monitors internet freedom and access.
The outage comes during a highly tense period, following intensified Israeli strikes in the region and an escalating domestic security crisis, according to the BBC.
Iran’s Ministry of Information and Communications Technology confirmed the restrictions, justifying them as “temporary security measures.”
According to international media, partial disruptions had begun earlier, but the situation recently worsened, leaving much of the country virtually disconnected.
This has directly affected the evacuation of residents from Tehran and other cities, while businesses are shutting down en masse due to the inability to operate normally.
