Iran has imposed temporary nationwide restrictions on internet access, citing national security concerns, according to the country’s Ministry of Information and Communications Technology.

“In response to the hostile misuse of the national communications network by the aggressive enemy for military purposes and to endanger the lives and property of innocent people, internet access restrictions have been temporarily implemented by the competent authorities,” the Ministry said in a statement, as reported by foreign media outlets.

Despite the restrictions, the Ministry noted that access to “public communication services and domestic platforms remains available,” and efforts are being made to “maintain service quality” for users within Iran.

This move follows a report by NetBlocks, a non-governmental organization monitoring internet governance, which said Iran is experiencing a near-total internet blackout. “Network data shows that Iran is now in the midst of an almost complete national internet outage,” the group posted on X (formerly Twitter).

The Iranian government has frequently restricted internet access during periods of unrest. Notably, during the nationwide protests in 2022, authorities enforced widespread internet shutdowns in an effort to suppress dissent against government policies.
