Iran’s Foreign Minister, Seyed Abbas Araghchi, has called the United States “ridiculous” and accused it of “begging the world” to buy Russian oil.
Earlier, the United States announced it would temporarily ease sanctions on Russian oil — originally imposed to cut funding for the war in Ukraine — in an effort to lower rising global prices, Sky News reported.
Araghchi’s post included Friday’s front page of the Financial Times, which claimed that Russia could earn $150 million per day (£113 million) following the US decision.
A Sky News correspondent in Moscow said the Kremlin would likely welcome the move, as it would provide a one-month cash injection as well as a diplomatic win.
“We are already seeing business begin. Thailand has said it is ready to buy the oil,” Bennett said.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz also stated on Friday that the US decision was “wrong.”
